The Role of Heritage Buildings today

The Victoria Hall is an impressive building right in the centre of Sheffield - opposite the famous Crucible and Lyceum Theatres.

It was clearly built as a church - during a time when hundreds (yes hundreds) would come on Sundays to listen to Methodist ministers valued for passionate articulate calls to mission and social action - at the heart of much of Methodist theology.

The Victoria Hall is a beautiful example of a city Mission Church, that is - a church not just built for worship, but for a range of social good - education, training, workshops, and social support, live music and concerts. In fact Victoria Hall was a leading concert venue for more than 30 years - when the Sheffield City Hall was built!

Today, we are home to a number of Sheffield charities, and our ‘mission’ is to provide affordable office space and room hire so people in and around Sheffield benefit from frontline services, activities, skills classes - as well as church! A modern take on the original purpose of these magnificent city centre heritage buildings. ….. That’s our ‘day job’.

We also we host a fantastic range of choral, orchestral and performing arts - as well as meetings and conferences in the beautiful Main Hall - we call this our ‘party frock’ part of the business. Income from conferences and events helps us to maintain the lovely Victoria Hall, and help us to keep our prices affordable for charities and independent groups to do their essential work.

Not just a pretty face :-)
