With the combined forces of Sheffield’s own Escafeld Chorale, and Chesterfield’s Rose Choir, A Northern Requiem, which received its premiere performance last year, celebrates the industrial North and mourns the loss of industry.
Critically acclaimed ensemble, Harlequin Brass bring to life the music of the former coalfields as the new work weaves between prayers from the requiem mass and roaring chants from the picket lines. They are joined by internationally recognised violinist, Morven Bryce, founder member of the Tippet String Quartet and guest leader of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and BBC Concert Orchestra. Mezzo Soprano, Louise Collett, who has performed with Opera North and the English National Opera, soars effortlessly over the combined forces of over 100 performers. A Northern Requiem is conducted by its composer, Jonathan Francis.
For the performance in Sheffield, miners from Shirebrook and Arkwright collieries in North Derbyshire will be joined by former miners from the South Yorkshire region in what promises to be an awe-inspiring march past.
